Most people who book a sofa clean in Singapore pick a method by price or by what sounds cleaner. That is how a lightly used sofa ends up damp for an afternoon, or a sofa with years of stains gets a quick steam and still looks tired.
Should you steam clean your sofa or shampoo it? The two methods do different jobs. We run both every week in HDB flats and condos, and this guide explains what each one does to your fabric, how long you wait before sitting down again, and which items suit which method. You will also see the things neither method can promise, so you book the right one the first time.
What is the difference between upholstery steam cleaning and shampooing?
Quick Answer: Steam cleaning uses only water, heated to around 165°C, to sanitise fabric, kill dust mites and lift odour. It suits regular upkeep and homes with babies or pets. Shampooing adds a cleaning solution, brush agitation and wet extraction to pull out old stains and grime, then needs about 3 to 4 hours to air dry.
This is how each job runs when our crew arrives.
High pressure steam cleaning. We vacuum the item with an industrial vacuum, then go over it with a lint roller to lift the dust the vacuum left behind. The steamer runs at around 165°C. We spray an ozone disinfectant, then press the steam head onto each section for 1 to 2 seconds. No detergent touches the fabric.
Shampooing. It starts with the same industrial vacuum and ozone disinfectant. Then we spray an eco-friendly shampoo that also deodorises, and scrub with soft brushes to loosen dirt trapped between the fibres. The brushes also catch hair and pet fur. Last comes wet extraction with hot steam, and you can watch the dirty water come out through the clear window on the tool.
So steam sanitises fabric that is already fairly clean, and shampooing pulls dirt out of fabric that is not. Our own service deck lists steam as "general cleaning only". Shampooing is the one we recommend for upholstery that has not been cleaned in a long time. Both are done on site, so nothing leaves your home.

When should you steam clean your sofa?
Pick steam when the sofa looks fine but you want it hygienic. That covers most homes that clean their sofa once or twice a year.
Steam is our pick in four situations:
- Babies, young kids or pets at home. Steam uses only water, so no detergent residue stays on the fabric where a baby's cheek or a dog's nose lands.
- Allergies and dust mites. High heat kills dust mites, and the steam binds dust so it is not blown back into the room.
- Musty smell from humidity. Singapore's damp air lets mildew odour build up in cushions. Heat helps remove or lighten it.
- Items you cannot soak. Curtains (steamed on the front side while still hanging), blinds, baby cots, strollers, soft toys and comforters all suit steam better than a wet shampoo.
A good couch steam cleaner also reaches into seams and tight corners that a brush struggles with. Our service page lists fabrics like velvet, suede, Alcantara, polyester, nylon and faux leather as steam-safe, with the heat adjusted to the fabric.
Steam dries faster than shampooing because far less water goes into the cushion. A steamed sofa is usually dry to the touch in about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the fabric and the weather.

When is shampooing the better choice?
Shampooing earns its extra drying time when the fabric is visibly dirty. Think grey armrests, a darker seat where someone always sits, spill marks from years back, or a sofa bought second-hand.
We recommend shampooing for:
- Sofas and cushions not cleaned for a long time. Built-up body oil and grime need a cleaning solution and a brush, not just heat.
- Visible stains and water rings. Shampooing and wet extraction can remove or lighten them.
- High-use seats. Office chairs, fabric dining chairs and fabric car seats pick up grime fast.
- Mattresses and rugs with marks. We clean the top and four sides of a mattress, and the top of a carpet or rug.
Plan around the drying. After extraction the fabric is not fully dry. Allow about 3 to 4 hours of air drying, and longer on a wet, humid day. To speed it up, point a fan straight at the sofa, open the windows, or put cushions in the sun if you have space.
That is why we tell customers not to book a shampoo on the morning they are hosting guests. Book it earlier in the day or the day before. Full details are on our upholstery shampooingpage.

Steam vs shampoo: which one does your item need?
This table comes from our own service deck. Several items can take either method, so the real question is how dirty the item is.
| High pressure steam | Shampooing | |
|---|---|---|
| What goes on the fabric | Water only | Eco-friendly shampoo, then wet extraction |
| Best for | Regular sanitising, allergies, kids and pets | Old stains, heavy grime, long-neglected items |
| Drying time | Usually dry to the touch in about 1 to 2 hours | About 3 to 4 hours, longer on humid days |
| Chemical residue | None | Extracted, but a solution is used |
| Items we steam | Fabric sofa, mattress (top and 4 sides), pillow, cushion, comforter, stroller, baby cot, soft toy, curtain (front side), blinds, carpet or rug (top) | |
| Items we shampoo | Fabric sofa, mattress (top and 4 sides), pillow, cushion, office chair, fabric car seat, carpet or rug (top) | |
| Both methods | Kill bacteria and germs, eliminate dust mites, reduce mould, remove or lighten odour | Same |
Two quick rules we use on site:
- If you can see the dirt, shampoo. Steam sanitises but will not scrub out a set-in mark.
- If you cannot see the dirt but you can smell it or sneeze at it, steam.
Many homes mix the two, shampooing the stained sofa and steaming the mattress and curtains in the same visit. Both are priced per item, so combining them in one booking is simple. Ask us for a quote.

What neither method can promise
Stain, mould and odour removal is done on a best effort basis. We will remove or lighten what we can, but nobody can promise 100% removal on an old stain.
Some things are outside both services. Hard stains such as glue, adhesive, cement and paint cannot be removed by steam or shampoo. Leather is a different material altogether. It gets its own process with a foam cleaner and a leather conditioner, covered on our leather sofa deep cleaning page.
Before booking, check the care tag under your cushions. Many sofas carry a cleaning code: W means water-based cleaning is fine, S means solvent only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only. S and X fabrics should not be wet-cleaned, so we assess them on site before choosing a method. Send us a photo of the tag with your enquiry and we will tell you what fits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it good to steam clean a sofa?
Yes, for most fabric sofas. Steam kills bacteria and dust mites, lightens odour and leaves no detergent behind. It is the better choice for regular upkeep and homes with kids or pets. For visible old stains, shampooing works better.
Does steam cleaning remove sofa stains?
It can lighten light surface marks, but it is not built for set-in stains. Steam is a sanitising clean. For water rings, grime and old spills, shampooing with brush agitation and wet extraction gives a better result, on a best effort basis.
How long does a sofa take to dry after shampooing?
About 3 to 4 hours of air drying after wet extraction, and longer in wet or humid weather. A fan pointed at the sofa, open windows or some sun on the cushions all speed it up.
Is steam cleaning safe for babies and pets?
Yes. Our steam process uses only water, so no chemical residue is left on the fabric. Steam also binds dust instead of stirring it into the air, which helps anyone with allergies.
Can you steam clean a leather sofa?
We do not steam or shampoo leather. Leather sofas get a separate process: a foam cleaner worked into the pores, a wipe down, then a conditioner to keep the leather from cracking.
So, steam or shampoo?
Steam your sofa when it looks clean but you want it hygienic, with nothing but water on the fabric. Shampoo it when you can see the dirt, and plan for 3 to 4 hours of drying. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the sofa and its care tag.
